the season’s activities after they took over the track management duties on June 18. A buffet dinner followed.
After dinner, Tom gave recognition rewards to all of the track personnel, many of whom were volunteers, and to all others who were instrumental in keeping Hollywood Hills Speedway functioning so well. Next came the awards for the top ten in points in all seven divisions. Drivers fourth through tenth each received a trophy while first through third were awarded an embroidered, lined jacket as well as a trophy.
The order of presentations started with the Cruisers which was followed by the Hobby Stocks, Street Stocks, Mini Sprints, Late Models, Modifieds and Sprints. When it was time for the Late Models, our former Race Director, Barry Conant, made the presentations for RGSLM while Mike Hetmer, our website manager, ran photo slides of all of the competitors’ hot rods. The following is a synopsis of Barry’s presentation:
“We would like to thank all of the staff as well as the tribe here at Hollywood Hills Speedway. This is a first rate facility and we are extremely fortunate to race at such a facility. We hope the commitment will continue for local dirt racers to have access to this facility for many years to come.
Thank you to Tom Ball and Robert Shay for their commitment and assistance in the continued growth of the Rio Grande Super Late Model division.
We finished the 2007 season with only eight cars, but at last season’s banquet, I stated that in two years, we would become a premier division at this facility. I believe that will still happen. We finished this season with 15 cars and have received several inquiries about additional cars for the 2009 season. Please contact our drivers and officials about information for RGSLM.
On a personal note, my four year old son, Jared, and I want to thank all the drivers, crews, track officials and fans for their words of encouragement as we lost my wife, Ada Rae, to cancer in August. We had many people make this difficult time more bearable and it’s always nice to hear a kind word from a friend.
And now to honor the drivers:
10th place…the youngest competitor in our division…he had 217 points and five top 10 finishes, from Albuquerque driving the black lightning McQueen #95 is Steven Dutcher.
9th place…he returned to racing after many years away from the sport…he had 235 points and 7 top ten finishes, from Los Lunas and driving the black and yellow flamed #06 is Ron Williams. (Ron was unable to be at the banquet.)
8th place…last year’s HHS Hobby Stock Champion…he had a slow start to the season with some minor mechanical problems to sort out but made great progress to finish the season…he had 240 points with one heat win, one top five finish and three top ten finishes, from Belen driving the black #78 is Ron (Skimmer) Leathem.
7th place…with several seasons in our division, it was great to see this driver get his first heat win and the excitement he displayed…he had 262 points with one heat win and four top ten finishes, from Los Lunas driving the red #26 is Monty Neff.
6th place…quit racing, raised his kids and got them off to college and decided it was time to play in the dirt again after a long absence…he had 302 points with three top five finishes and three top ten finishes, from Albuquerque driving the blue and white #59 is Alan Bowers. (Alan was not in attendance to receive his trophy.)
5th place…got off to a very not typical slow start but finished on a very high not with a very competitive car at the end…he had 324 points with six top five finishes and one top ten, from Albuquerque driving the purple and white #38 is Marc Herrera.
